Selectivity of yolk protein uptake: comparison of vitellogenins of two insects.

چکیده
-The vitellogenins of Hyalophora cecropia and Blattella germanica have similar Stokes' radii (69 and 75,&), sedimentation coefficients (15.9 and 16.8s) and isoelectric points (pH 5.7 and 5.0), and share similar amino acid compositions with vitellogenins of other animals. The two vitellogenins show no immunological crossreaction. Blattella oocytes take up their own vitellogenin in vivo at a rapid rate and that of Hyalophora at a low rate comparable to that of a non-vitellogenic protein. Hyalophora oocytes take up their own vitellogenin rapidly in vitro and Blattella Vitellogenin only at a negligible rate. Molecular weights, shapes and charges of the vitellogenins are similar to non-vitellogenins and form no basis for selective uptake.

Vitellogenin and Vitellin in Insects
Vitellogenin is the generic name for a unique group of proteins that are synthesized extraovarially and become the major egg yolk protein, vitellin. Similar proteins are found in all animals with yolky eggs. Because of their high concentration in the egg, and the relative ease with which they can be purified, these proteins are excellent material for the study of the regulation of their synthes...
متن کاملRegulation of the vitellogenin receptor during Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis.
In many insects, development of the oocyte arrests temporarily just before vitellogenesis, the period when vitellogenins (yolk proteins) accumulate in the oocyte. Following hormonal and environmental cues, development of the oocyte resumes, and endocytosis of vitellogenins begins. An essential component of yolk uptake is the vitellogenin receptor. In this report, we describe the ovarian express...
متن کاملVitellogenin, the extraovarian precursor of the protein yolk in Crustacea: a review.
This article reviews our knowledge of crustacean vitellogenin and its role in vitellogenesis. Besides the biochemical and immunological aspects, particular attention has been given to hormonal control of the synthesis of this yolk precursor. Some examples from insects, amphibians and birds are compared.
متن کاملMolecular Characterization and Function Analysis of the Vitellogenin Receptor from the Cotton Bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)
Developing oocytes accumulate plentiful yolk protein during oogenesis through receptor-mediated endocytosis. The vitellogenin receptor (VgR), belonging to the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family, regulates the absorption of yolk protein. In this work, the full-length vitellogenin receptor (HaVgR) in the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera was identified, encoding a 1817 residue prot...
متن کاملMolecular Characterization of Vitellogenin and Its Receptor Genes from Citrus Red Mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor)
The production and uptake of yolk protein play an important role in the reproduction of all oviparous organisms. Vitellogenin (Vg) is the precursor of vitellin (Vn), which is the major egg storage protein, and vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is a necessary protein for the uptake of Vg into developing oocytes. In this paper, we characterize the full-length Vg and VgR, PcVg1 and PcVgR, respectively, ...
